Fromagerie La Moutonniere is a well-established farmstead dairy that is operated by partners Alastair MacKenzie and Lucille Giroux in Ste-Helene de Chester, Quebec. On the beautiful countryside of this small town, MacKenzie and Giroux have established a sheep farm and a state-of-the-art cheese-making plant that sustainably produces delicious sheep’s milk cheeses!
MacKenzie left his home in New Zealand over 13 years ago and brought with him to Quebec his passion for sustainable farming and food production. Once settled in Quebec, MacKenzie teamed up with a native Quebecois, Lucille Giroux, who had started making artisan cheeses to add value to her wool business. Today, MacKenzie spends his time running the farm operations, raising the sheep and milking them. Giroux and her team at the dairy take the precious liquid and transform it into the delicious cheeses that get shipped to us in Toronto!
The result of MacKenzie and Giroux’s hard work has paid off time and time again in the form of recognition and awards for their farmstead cheeses. MacKenzie, who is notoriously difficult to reach due to his long hours tending to the sheep, speaks humbly of their products and talks only of the duo’s desire to make the best possible cheese out of the best raw ingredients. Aside from sheep and cheese, family is the most important thing to MacKenzie. He spends his precious free time with his wife and three children.
